We like the way the Algonquin Hotel thinks. Every year on August 8th, they host a fashion show in honor of their cat Matilda‘s birthday (a catwalk, if you will) which pretty much entails dressing up a bunch of furry creatures in cute costumes and showing them off in front of their friends. And kittens in costume may even be better than kittens in fashion editorials.
2010′s legendary event featured felines in Raggedy Ann costumes, pretty pink tutus, and even a Cleopatra headdress, and though they apparently scaled back the event this year, the participants still look pretty gussied up. And they have to be to fête such a fancy birthday girl! You see, Matilda is a pretty famous cat, even though her Twitter followers nowhere near rivalthose of picky, pampered pussy Choupette Lagerfeld.
What she lacks in social media superiority, however, she makes up for in a storied past. This is the hotel’s tenth Matilda, as they’ve been keeping the tradition alive ever since the first was adopted off the streets in the 1930s. She’s also quite the do-gooder, which we suspect Choupette is not — donations collected in conjunction with the show benefit animal rescue organization NY Save.
Check out the photos below, then head on over to Gothamist for even more fancy felines!
